Osteoporosis is a disease that causes thinning and weakening of the normal bone. Thinner bones are not necessarily more likely to break; a bone that is thinner is more likely to get a fracture that would turn into a break if it is not treated immediately. Normal bone marrow has small holes within it, but the bone marrow with Osteoporosis will have larger holes throughout the bone. People with Osteoporosis might not know that they have it. The only way Osteoporosis can be diagnosed is by having a bone density test, or a dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). The DEXA test takes x-rays of a persons bones to tell them whether they have Osteoperois, and also the severity of their Osteoperosis. Those who think they have Osteropersons should not wait to get tested because over time Osteoporosis will get worse if left untreated and undiagnosed. If Osteoporosis runs in a persons family they should have their doctors run the Osteoporosis tests earlier in life so it can be treated and possibly prevented.
