Punic Wars Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The Punic Wars, fought between Rome and Carthage during the Third and Second centuries B.C., were very important for the formation of Rome as a power abroad in the Mediterranean. Rome ruled over mainly just the Italian peninsula at the outbreak of hostilities and Carthage had an immense trade network and empire that it had inherited from its Mother-land Phoenicia. ("Rome & Carthage" 225) Despite its trade network and superior navy at the start of the wars, Carthage failed to win any of the Punic Wars. In my opinion Carthage's connection to Phoenicia and its priorities as a civilization as opposed to those of Rome were a large part of what caused Carthage to lose and be conquered.
Carthage was founded in 814 B.C. by Phoenician colonists from Tyre. It was created on the site of modern-day Tunis on the coast of North Africa. The city was situated around a natural harbor so the Carthaginians continued the seafaring dominance that their Phoenician brothers had.
