Death - An Uncomfortable and Uncommon Subject. We all handle death differently. There is no set standard or guidelines listed as to what is appropriate on how a person grieves. It is difficult enough for people without mental retardation to sometimes understand or even express their emotion concerning the loss of a loved one. An individual whose thought process is altered and doesn't comprehend time and space may not know how to handle the loss that death creates. Communicating their loss should be done as soon as possible. If at all possible choose a comfortable environment for the individual and be prepared for a reaction. Be prepared to discuss at length with the individual, or at least answer any questions honestly. Include the individual in family discussions pretaining to the loss of a parent, grandparent, sibling, aunt, uncle. It's important that the individual feels like they are important enough to be included. Knowing the individual is helpful in identifying the signs of grieving.
