Illiad essay Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Barbaric and Civilized? Humans have always struggled with the complications of good verses evil. Mankind has created actions, and emotions that resemble both a barbarous and civilized state of being. In Homer's Iliad, the Trojans and the Akhaians appear to be bloodthirsty, callous, savages that tend to frequently embark on killing sprees in battle. On the other hand some of the same characters in the Iliad act conscious, respectful, and zealous towards others. Even the gods have barbaric and civilized traits. In the Iliad, Homer has two central characters that act as heroes, Akhilleus and Hektor. They both display brutality and civilized behavior in the epic. These heroes contrast differently in many ways. Although they are both war heroes, they came from deviant sides of the battle and fought each other under dissimilar beliefs. Akhilleus, son of Peleus and Thetis a demigod, is the greatest Greek champion has to offer. He appears to be a noble, but when Briseis, Akhilleus' girl and war prize, is stripped from him by Agamemnon, he overreacts greatly. He lashes out at Agamemnon......
