Prescription drug abuse has become a prevalent problem in the United States today, and one that is showing an increasing trend. The accessibility of prescription drugs is thought to be the main stimulus behind this growing national trouble. More medications are being prescribed today than ever before, and some websites allow for the illegal purchase of these medications without a prescription. The most commonly abused prescription drugs are the ones that elicit the most desirable psychoactive response. The most frequently abused prescription drugs include opioids (OxyCotin, Vicodin), central nervous system depressants (Nembutal, Xanax) and stimulants. When physicians appropriately prescribe medications, and the patients take the recommended dose with the intention of relieving underlying symptoms, the act of taking prescription drugs is not seen as deviant. Abuse of prescription drugs, however, is seen as a deviant act. I would define prescription drug abuse as the habitual act of using medicinal drugs for non-medical purposes.
