When Britain declared war on Germany Canada was automatically at war. The invasion of Belgium in 1914 forged a unity among Canadians, with the first contingent sent to Europe being composed of 33000 volunteers. Canada entered the war with one division; by 1916 it had four divisions on the front line with a fifth for reinforcements. And by the time the war had ended Canada had achieved its long sought national status.
The first major appearance of Canadian troops on the Western Front was in the second battle of Ypres. On April 22, 1915 the Germans released 160 tons of chlorine gas over a 6.5 km front at the French defenses. Without any form of defence against the gas attack the French troops were either killed or forced to retreat, leaving an enormous gap in the allied lines. The Germans made a small push through the gap, which left the Canadian troops surrounded on three sides. The Canadians held the line throughout the night.
