Australopithecus Afarensis Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Australopithecus Afarensis (which means southern ape from afar) existed between 3.9 and 3.0 million years ago. The official classification is that Afarensis was a hominid. A hominid is a closely related member of the great ape classification. Hominid use to mean only direct ancestors of man, but now includes all of the greater apes.
In 1973 in Tanzania the first significant evidence afarensis was found. Without other pieces of the puzzle a single knee joint did not spark avid interest in the archeology world. So the team kept digging to see who this knee joint belonged too.
On November 24, 1974 in Hadar in the Awash Valley in Ethiopia, the most famous evidence of Australopithecus afarensis was found. The fossils found was discovered and named by Donald Johnson, Maurice Taieb, Yves Coppens and Tim White and were named "Lucy"
