Cognitive Interventions: Using Humor as an Effective Tool Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Albert Ellis, a well known therapist and author, was largely responsible for the development of the cognitive approach to counseling. The main components of this theory are centered around the idea that the human mind is capable of rational thought, understanding and logical decision making. Ellis' method of therapy, which is widely recognized as the predominant method within the cognitive approach, is called rational emotive therapy (RET). As the name suggests, this theory is based on the idea that emotions are influenced by rational thought. This basically means that a person's emotional state (sadness, anger, joy...) is not an automatic response to an outside event or circumstance. Rather, one's perception of that event or circumstance, how they process it, and whether they choose to respond rationally or irrationally is what determines how they will feel as a consequence (Parrott, 2003).
