As I opened the trash can the smell hit me. The garbage smelled as if it had been there for months. It was Thursday, and Tony's Restaurant usually throws out the rotten meat on Thursday evening's. As I sat there digging through the bag of green meat; I looked over my shoulder and saw people staring at me. I am used to the stares and the comments, but their judgment does not bother me. I am used to the way people treat me. I have been dumpster diving since I was thirteen. I have been coming to get meat every Thursday since. I feel like a regular customer. Theoretically I "order" the same thing every Thursday night. The restaurant throws out all the meat that goes bad throughout the week. I figure that I can take some of this and cook it. The heat kills the bacteria, and I have food for the week. Today's meat is better than most days. The meat is in good condition but smells horrible.
