Sexism in The Scarlet Letter Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Hester Prynne, an adulterer who has a baby out of wedlock and who is one of the main characters in The Scarlet Letter, undergoes many conflicts and punishments from having this affair. The scarlet letter "A" brands her,so her punishment is known to all. The father of her baby, whom no one in the town knows, is not punished by an outside source as did Hester. The torture and pain that he suffers is self-inflicted because he is a coward. Yet, suppose this situation was reversed; the mother does not confess and have the baby, instead the baby is with the father. The level of punishment would not equal the mother's punishment level. In "The Scarlet Letter," Nathanial Hawthorne uses external conflict, symbolism and point of view to show how sexism occurs within the Puritan community.
