Joseph taunted and teased, a mischievous glint in his eyes. The rest of the boys laughed as they lit up and puffed away. They knew I did not have the guts, and that made them feel like heroes. They looked at me condescendingly, an air of superiority reflected in the smoke they exhaled so confidently, so nonchalantly.
I so very much wanted to be like them. All my life, I never had friends. Mum and Dad moved around so much, and this must have been the sixth school I was enrolled in in three years. I have gotten so tired of adapting to a new environment with new faces. I just wanted to feel accepted, to have someone to talk and listen to. Joseph was the first person to come up to me when I first stepped foot into this school, and I appreciated his gesture.
