Why Was The 1st of July 1916 a Disaster? 'Obviously, the greater the length of a war the higher is likely to be the number of casualties in it on either side'. Sir Douglas Haig The battle of the Somme started in July 1st 1916. It lasted until November 1916. The battle took place near the Somme River, North-Central Somme & South-eastern Pas-de-Calais Departments. The Somme is a river in northern France and the fighting was along a 40km line north and south of the river, between Serre and Curlu. In 1916 Britain and France were part of a group of countries called the Allied Powers. They were fighting World War I against another group called the Central Powers, led by Germany with Austria-Hungary. A lot of the fighting took place along the Western Front where the soldiers had dug out a lot of special ditches called trenches. The two sets of trenches faced each other across an area called no man's land. The soldiers lived in the trenches and mounted attacks using things like rifles, machine guns and poison gas. The aim of the Allied attacks was to break through the enemy'......
