Studying the theatrical devices used in Baz Luhrmann's 1996 modern-day production of 'Romeo and Juliet', I found some very clever tricks and techniques used purposefully for maximum viewer impact. Luhrmann's portrayal of this classic love story conveys Shakespeare's preliminary intentions exceptionally well and his use of theatrical devices is particularly impressive.
Initially, the high angle shot Luhrmann chooses for the opening of 'Romeo and Juliet' looks down upon Verona Beach City from the viewpoint of the statue of Christ, gently suggesting that he has been neglected amidst all the fighting. This statue stands in the middle of the two corporate buildings (Capulet and Montague), outlining that he remains neutral as to whom he supports. Luhrmann nurtures the notion that the feud centres around religion (more than likely, the difference in Catholic and Protestant beliefs) as the statue of Christ is one of the first to be seen. Sometimes, the camera shoots from below the statue and peers upwards, signifying that the people of Verona should look up to and follow Christ's teaching......
