Throughout the past few decades teachers have turned to different strategies for improving student learning and improving the educational system that is already intact. One strategy that has been recognized is the use of peer tutors. Higher education has noted that students acting as mentors, teaching, helping, and assisting other students have been successful (Colvin, 2008). Peer mentoring programs are being implemented across the United States. It is nearly impossible for higher education students to succeed in college without ever asking another peer or fellow classmate for help or understanding. Students learn from each other. Students who act as mentors are students who are facing similar challenges and often are taking similar courses as their mentees. However, peer mentors usually have been students at the school longer than the mentees and have received special training; this along with their knowledge and experience at a particular school is what sets them apart.
