Life in Mexico Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

For Frances Erskine Inglis, emigrating to Boston from her native Scotland in the autumn of 1831 was the beginning of an adventure she would never have imagined. Fanny ,as she had always been called, arrived in America with her widowed mother and her sisters to open a school for girls. Within seven years she had met and married Angel Calderon de la Barca, 14 years her senior, and set off on with him to Havana in his new appointment as first envoy sent by Spain to independent Mexico. Life in Mexico is her journey, described in letters to relatives and personal journals. This well-born Scottish woman, wife of a Spanish diplomat, left an enduring and enjoyable account of life in Mexico during the first half of the 19th century. The differences between the hierarchy of classes is seen within the houses that they lived in, the food that they ate , and the clothes that they wore. Houses in Havana belonging to the upper class, Fanny was to discover, were large, airy, and built in a square.
