Marriage may be an institution initiated by God, but the fulfillment of this institution is totally up to mankind. Each couple I interviewed expressed a wide variety of expectations, experiences and levels of happiness and achievements. I believe this study will illustrate there are no set of rules that will ensure the sanctity or happiness of marriage. It is possible that two of the finest people on the face of the earth would not be able to create a serious and happy relationship in the confines of marriage. I interviewed 11 couples in all. Most interviewed couples were within 5 years of age and the same racial ethnic group. The ages of the couples varied from 19-76 with nine of the couples being in a marriage and one couple in a "living together" relationship and one in a college boyfriend, girlfriend relationship. Ten of the eleven relationships were in the same economic status. Ten of the eleven married because of their similar backgrounds, social and economic expectations.
