"I'm Just Dying to Be Thin:" Anorexia and Bulimia In today's society, especially in western civilization, there is an ever-growing emphasis on what is considered the "ideal" physical appearance. The once desired look of a healthy and well maintained body has been overshadowed by the ever growing fad of being "model thin." This unrealistic image is promoted not only by the media, Hollywood, and magazines; but also by society and our peers as well. As many males and females struggle to meet this unrealistic goal, they acquire unhealthy, sometimes detrimental, dietary habits that lead to eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia, and bulimia nervosa. These disorders occur prevalently among young Caucasian females; however, the numbers of occurrences are increasing in males, other races, and other age groups. This unhealthy pursuit for unnatural thinness becomes an obsession to many people.
