What were the achievements of the 1945-51 labour governments?
1945 heralded a new era; the Second World War was brought to its conclusion and with it an election. The victorious candidate was Clement Attlee. Deputy prime minister in the war cabinet and world war one war hero Attlee was to face a major challenge as C Barnard (1986, p 62) phrased it in the Audit of War "to them the victory of war merited a rich reward, and they meant to have it" this meant the Attlee Administration must make their promises into achievements for the people.
Overcoming economic circumstances is my first thought of achievement, the war had bankrupted Britain, to continue fighting we were reliant upon loans from America however once the Japanese laid down their weapons support came to an abrupt end. D Murphy in Britain 1914-2000 (2000, p285) stated "this destroyed Britain hopes of a lengthy transition from war to peace, putting the implementation of the new government policies in jeopardy." A statement which Lord Keynes affirmed in 1945 "Britain was facing an economic Dunkirk.......
