During the December holidays, a black South African woman is telling the story of
moving to Johannesburg to live with her sister who works as a domestic worker for a wealthy
white family. She adores reading and writing all the time. On weekdays, she is locked in her
sister's room to keep the white Madam from finding out. She must endure in order to work
and support herself. The only place she can call her own is a small, disused public toilet in a
park, which is a shelter that allows her to read and write (Mhlope, 315-317). The Toilet,
written by Gcina Mhlope, was published in 1987. Between 1948 and early 1994, apartheid
dominated the Republic of South Africa, which was a system of legal racial separation to
put all South Africans into three racial categories, the whites, the blacks and the colored
(Robinson, para.2). Without doubt, a black South African was certainly considered as a
Non-White, the same as Gcina Mhlope, who's one of the few woman storytellers in a
Males-Country, desire to keep history alive and encourage South African......
