The Silk Road was a collection of roads which went from China to Mediterranean Sea, crossing Central Asian and linking with South Asia, North Africa and Europe. The network of roads was used as a trade route, covering 8000km. It was in fact not one route but many connected routes. It was named 'the Silk Road' by German geographer Ferdinand von Richthofen, in 1877, because of the large quantity of silk that was transported along the road (Wikipedia, 2008). Trade on these roads was an important part of the development of the civilizations of India, Egypt, Persia, Byzantium, Rome, and Arabia. Trade on these roads helped to create the world as we know today. This essay will describe the Silk Road. In particular, it will focus on how the road was used, then it's development and history and finally the reasons for the decline of the routes. The Silk Road was used for many things. Of course, goods were transported along it. These goods included silk, satin, musk, rubies, diamonds, and pearls (Wikipedia, 2008).
