Introduction
The period following the rule of Suharto has been a very tense period in Indonesian politics. Recent events have escalated the level of threats like terrorism and organized crime, while the old threats like racial and religious differences and economic disparities have been aggravated.
Indonesia is state with several dimensions to its internal and external security, given the racial, ethnic and religious diversities within its borders. The geography of Indonesia also poses fundamental challenges to the safe guard of national security. All these calculations were present during the time of Suharto, but the recent event have only acted to highlight these differences and the difficult role of the Indonesian Armed forces play in maintaining national security.
