A peptic ulcer known as ulcus peptic-um,is a sore in the lining of the stomach or duodenum. The first part of the upper small intestine is the duodenum. Peptic ulcers located in the stomach are called gastric ulcers. Ulcers that are located in the in the duodenum is called a duodenal ulcer. These ulcers develop when your intestines or stomach's protective layer is broken down. When your stomach stomach's protective layer is broken down digestive juices can damage the intestines or stomach tissues. These juices, contain hydrochloric acid and a enzyme called pepsin. Ulcers can also injure the esophagus, a tube that connects the mouth to the stomach. Most ulcers develop in the stomach or duodenum. Helicobacter (H.pylori) and NSAIDs( non-steroidal anti-flammatory drugs) are the most two common causes of peptic ulcers.
