Summary On John Steinbecks short story flight Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The theme of John Steinbeck's short story "Flight" is based on a mestiso man named Pepe Torres . Pepe Torres is the oldest of Mama Torres's three children . Unlike Rosy and Emilio , his sister and brother , Pepe has no responsibility he is lazy and does not fish much . Instead , he spends most of his time at home throwing his big black blade into a redwood post . Pepe thinks he is a man, and bases his manhood on conventional symbols . When Mama Torres asks Pepe to go into town to buy medicine and salt Pepe is thrilled and cannot wait to put his fathers hatband on his black hat (pg 428). Mama Torres also hands him his green handkerchief . Pepe had always looked up to his late father , and wearing his fathers hat and being armed with his weapons makes Pepe feel he is a man .
But when Pepe ultimately makes the decision to kill that man in Monterey with his knife, he proves he is not yet a man (pg 431). Cowering away he goes back home explains the situation to Mama Torres where she has no other choice but to send him into the dark on a horse, before the dark watching men cam......
