The book I chose for the extra credit assignment was Snow Country by Y. Kawabata. The story centers on Shimamura who has a love affair with Komako. The main reason I chose this book is because it was shortest book on the list. While reading the book, I found the term geisha, some important characters, and the main theme of love to be interesting. The point of view and the relationship between Shimamura and Komako seemed to be lacking details. One geographical issue talked about in the book is the difference between urban and rural countryside lifestyles of the Japanese. One main term that seemed to appear numerous times was the word geisha. After reading a few pages, I did begin to have an idea about the meaning. I, however, became really curious after coming upon it later on in the book. That is when I decided to look it up on the Internet. What I found is that geisha is a term used in the Japanese culture meaning a women whose profession is to tend to the different needs of a male.
