Immigration in the Gilded Age Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Immigration is an important theme in American History, beginning with the original immigrants from England who founded Jamestown. Before the Civil War, immigrants to the United States came mostly from Northern and Western European countries. After the Civil War, America experienced an industrial expansion and an urban explosion which dramatically changed the population. A "new immigration" began that brought more immigrants to the United States than ever before. These immigrants came largely from Eastern and Southern Europe, countries that previously had not contributed significantly to the U.S. immigrant population. War, racial persecution, economic conditions, and the promise of a better life in America fueled the immigration surge. Once admitted to the United States, however, most immigrants faced the harsh reality of poor living and working conditions, poverty, disease and racial animosity.
