Our understanding of effective learning and teaching to make a successful lesson has developed over many years and continues to change. Effective learning itself is dependent on many factors, such as teachers, school, area, pupils, and so can vary from one school to another. The important thing is to find a balance. This essay will highlight three areas/features of a lesson that I found helped make it successful during my school experience.
A successful lesson can be defined as 'a lesson where a teacher has accomplished their objectives particularly well' (Brookhart S and Rusnak T, 1993; 18). The 1996 Scottish Consultative Council on the Curriculum (SCCC) paper discussed that teachers 'need to ensure that there are opportunities for all learners to develop all their abilities, playing on their strengths and developing the areas they are less strong in' (SCCC, 1996; 5), and indeed, in my school experience......
