Life of a slave would be very impersonal, dull, and repetitive. One who has no rights often has no sense of belonging and no sense of ownership of their utilities. Now imagine yourself as a slave in late twentieth century America under the rule of a suppressive authoritarian government. You have just been given the assignment of childbearing--something that in the past would have been considered a crime punishable by imprisonment or death, given the conditions that the handmaid's were forced in to. You've just been given a new assignment as a handmaid for the commander, and so we set out on a journey .
Finding ownership in something under the before mentioned conditions certainly is notable and accordingly, Offred let's the reader know when she takes ownership in an object. The last sentence in chapter eight is possessive: "I called it mine." Offred, of course, is referring to her new room as she wonders what the commander is doing.
