Qing Dynasty in the 19th century
During the 19th century the Qing Dynasty was at its lowest point where they endured their longest period of dilemma and hardship. With the extensive use of Opium and the Taiping Rebellion, the Qing Dynasty encountered many years of adversity. In this essay I will explain how the Qing Dynasty encountered the opium epidemic and the Taiping Rebellion. This caused a decline in China and they way the world viewed them. The powerful rule of the Qing Dynasty was in a major crisis.
In the beginning of the 19th century the population in China grew rapidly and that was a sign of peace and prosperity (Ebrey, 305). Problems began to brew in the 1830's when the drug Opium began to spread throughout China (Lecture, 2/11). Opium was originally used for medicinal purposes only but began to be widely abused by the people of China. The British supplied and imported the Opium to China. In the 1830's more than 40,000 chest of Opium were transported into China every year.
