Compare and Contrast the short story "Rear Window" and the movie "It had to be murder" Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
On comparing and contrasting Cornell Woolrich's short story "Rear Window" (originally "It Had To Be Murder") to Alfred Hitchcock's film adaptation of the story, there are many differences amid the two. Major differences included Hitchcock's increased focus on the lives of the neighbors in the film and his role change of Sam, Jefferies houseman in the story, to Stella, an insurance company nurse. Hitchcock's changes resulted in a stronger character-focused plot when compared to the relatively single plot, that of the murder, in the short story.
By including more insight into the activities of Jeffries' neighbors, Hitchcock gave the film more depth. The neighbor insight added more perspectives to the short story's singular focus on the murder. For example, Hitchcock's portrayal of "Miss Torso", who seemed to be there for her physical attributes, added a sexual dynamic to the film (Hitchcock).
