Using Rewards Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Over the past several decades, there has been discussion within the educational community about the wisdom of offering children rewards for achieving academic or behavioral goals. Proponents of reward programs or behavior modification argue that uses of incentives are an appropriate and effective way to influence children's behavior (Koenig, 2002). Skeptics are from a school of thought that rewards are "extrinsic motivators," and as such do not support the goal of encouraging enthusiasm for learning or self-motivation for children (Kohn, 1993). The most articulate voice opposing the use of rewards in educational settings has been Alfie Kohn. Kohn (1993) suggested that rewards lead to the aversive experience of feeling controlled, and that they undermine children's intrinsic motivation to learn and achieve. He asserts his criticisms are supported by findings of numerous research studies that show rewards are strikingly ineffective at producing lasting change in attitudes or behaviors. As an educator who works with young children, I do not share this skepticism......
