Characterization of Jimmy Cross and Cassio in Literature Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

An essential part of the development of any good book or story is the characters. In addition to the story line, the characters are what keep the reader interested. Character development, or under development, will limit the readers interest and undermine the plot of the story. Though very important, characterization can be very difficult. Characterization is the way an author presents characters. There are two forms of characterization. In direct presentation, a character is described by the author, the narrator or the other characters. In indirect presentation, a character's traits are revealed by action and speech. In The Things They Carried the author uses direct presentation to disclose the traits of his character Jimmy Cross, whereas in Othello, the author uses the actions of and Cassio as a tool to reveal the true essence of the character. Even though characterized differently, Jimmy Cross and Cassio subsequently have some distinct similarities.
