U.S. Invasion of Guatemala Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The United Fruit Company was American-run corporation that had outposts all over the Caribbean. In the case of Guatemala, UF Co. drove up banana production, replacing coffee as the main export in an export oriented economy. The company was able to sign long term, tax free leases with the government in exchange for cheap labor and the promises of profit kick backs into the hands of rulers and local elites. In a rare case, the Great Depression and World War II did not help the Guatemalan economy because they were not manufacturing war materials. The Depression specifically - as in most other economies fueled by peasant labor - forced a heavier workload upon the peasantry as prices for their products fell. In 1931, General Jorge Ubico began governing via military coup. Given that Guatemala was now a military dictatorship, General Ubico made life even more miserable for the downtrodden poor by installing Vagrancy Laws while the U.S. turned a blind eye.
