Emily Dickinson was not your ordinary poet. She did not really follow the "normal" conventions of poetry. She is really unlike any other poet, quite remarkable actually. Her unusual style is what separates her from most of the poet of the world. She uses a sort of elliptical style of poetry. Her style is even reflected in the form her poetry takes. Her choice of wording is highly subjective. She also has concreteness in her poems even when talking about the most abstract of subjects. Also in this poem she tends to use opposites or oxy-morons to get her point across. In Emily Dickinson poem number five hundred and five, "I would not paint--a picture" one can see Dickinson's elliptical style in action. She will never say more than she must to get her point across. This can suggest either a quality of uncertainty, or one of finality. This is seen all throughout the poem through her frequent use of dashes.
