Bachae and Desire Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
The antagonists start out with a great deal of fame and end with their own downfall. There are many parallels in the myths of Euripides's "The Bacchae" applied in "A Streetcar Named Desire". Tennessee Williams, author of "A Streetcar Named Desire" makes his main character Blanche. The myth of "The Bacchae" has Pentheus as the main character. Both playwrights have a correlation where the characters are on a journey of self-realization. It is only when they have reached their doom, have they realized their mistakes. The truth of reality catches up with these blind characters, when it is too late and others around them have suffered.
In "The Bacchae" Pentheus has recently taken the throne. He is an ignorant and arrogant King, who seems to think all of Thebes is his. His ignorance makes him blind to reality. He ends up going against a God named Dionysus. He is not just any God, but also a relative of his. Pentheus is too caught up to realize the things around him. Pentheus was warned about his unawareness "Mark my words, Pentheus.......
