Apocalypses in Greek Myths Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
To the closed minded reader, the different counts of apocalypses in epic myths seem to all be identical to each other. In the examples of Homer's Odyssey, Genesis, and Gilgamesh, you would have a routine disobedience from a mortal human level against a higher God power. It seems to be that when the human disobeys, the gods destroy everything, but in fact it is much deeper than that. In Genesis and Gilgamesh the purpose of the apocalypses are to generally punish the wicked and somewhat reward the righteous, whereas in The Odyssey the concerns for righteous human behavior is second to the alliance and relationships to the other gods themselves.
The flood myths in both Genesis and Gilgamesh are not identical but are parallel in more ways than one. In a world of wicked and evil, God plans to deliver a flood to destroy the disobedient people but warns and prepares Noah who is a faithful and righteous man. He and his family prepare for the flood to come as everyone mocks them in disbelief. The reason for the flood planned in the epic Gilgamesh seems to be unknown, but it is irrelevant. G......
