Sarong in Hawaii Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

What comes to your mind when you hear the word sarong? Most people would be picturing a white sandy beach, the sway of the ocean breeze, bright green palm trees and a beautiful Hawaiian women walking down the beach wearing a stunning sarong. To tourists this is what a sarong is, a cover-up to protect your body from the sun, but to indigenous people it is so much more. Hawaiians believe in the meaning and history behind this 'cover-up', "Hawaiians believe the connection is real."(Ishtar, Love of the Land, 103). Tourism has decolonized everything that Hawaii once was. Before all the fancy hotels, major shopping centers, high end restaurants, and spectacular sightseeing, what was really here? Many people don't realize that Hawaii was a place of only natives who lived, worked, farmed, and cared for their land. "Through the people's aloha [love] and mana [strength] it became the beautiful Hawaiian community."(Ishtar, Love of the Land, 103). But in 1893 the United States overthrew the Hawaiian monarch and seized their land. This is when the transformation began......
