Mayor of Casterbridge: Determinism Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

In some point in everyone's life, everyone has asked themselves a similar question, "How did this happen?" Many people have different beliefs on how "this" happened such as a supernatural force, but the lives that we have today are a result of the choices that we made. Also, the choices that we make today will affect our present as well as our future. Thomas Hardy, the author of The Mayor of Casterbridge, would disagree with these statements. Being a determinist, he believes that there are other forces beyond human control that shape our lives. He showed his theory of determinism through Michael Henchard, the main character of his book, but this made me question, "Exactly what force shaped Henchard's life if there was a force outside of human control?" Not able to think of a force, I concluded that people control their lives. It was Henchard who controlled his own life and it was his choices that shaped his own life.
