The holism and reductionism debate is the argument of whether studying human beings as a whole or reducing the whole into simple component parts is the most adequate. Holism is the view that to understand a person the whole person has to be considered and that a person cannot be broken down into different parts. Holism says that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts; this view is taken on by Humanistic psychologists. Reductionism is the opposite view, that complex phenomena can be best understood by reducing them to separate simpler parts, for example explaining behaviour in terms of biochemical changes in cells. The law of Parsimony states that if two scientific theories are equally believable the simpler one should be preferred; this suits the idea of reductionism. The most extreme example of reductionism is quantum physics. There are different types of reductionism and the concept is used by many psychologists and in many areas.
