Estonia- bordered to the north by Finland, Russia in the east, Latvia to the south and the Baltic Sea to the west, is a small country in Northern Europe with a population of around 1.34 million. Estonians are among the oldest peoples in the world with the earliest settlements dating around 11000 years ago; and yet this is a land that has been ravaged, conquered and ruled over the centuries by its neighbors starting from the Livonian Crusade (1224-1227) the Christianizing project of Northern European lands by Pope Innocent III. Since then Estonia had been passed around between the Danes, German Roman Catholic Religious Order (Teutonic), Swedes and Russians; who with each successive rule tried to replace Estonian culture with theirs and dilute the native population. Estonians who aspired to become citizens or landlords tended to "Germanize" voluntarily as the German language and culture was identified with elitism. Consequently these 'Baltic Germans' formed the ruling bureaucracy regardless of who ruled and native Estonians were left to form the serfdom. Nonetheless Estonian ......
