Psychology is the scientific investigation of the mental processes, which include thinking, remembering, feeling, and behavior (Kowalski & Western, 2009). The major schools of thought in psychology are Structuralism, Functionalism, Behaviorism, Psychoanalysis, Gestalt , and Cognitive Psychology. Each one of these schools of thought in psychology have different theories. The first school of thought in psychology that I will discuss is Structuralism. Structuralism was the first school of psychology. Structuralism was developed by Edward Titchener to use introspection to uncover the basic elements of consciousness and the way they combined with each into new ideas (Kowalski & Western, 2009). Structuralism focused on breaking down the mental process into basic components (Kowalski & Western, 2009). This school of thought studied the consciousness as unscientific because the data of sensations and feelings can only be observed by the individual reporting them (Kowalski & Western, 2009).
