Dally and I raced down the hallway of the hospital, dodging wheelchairs and rolling hospital beds. Dally had this semi-pained look on his face as his tattered shoes slammed down on the waxed linoleum. His strides had started to lengthen and the moral judgement he used while maneuvering through the crowd turned to violence. He shoved past the nurses, doctors and orderlies as he scanned each room number for the one Johnny was in.
We saw the sign that lead to the ICU of the hospital. As we burst through the doors, I thought about how depressing the ICU waiting room. Even if you didn't know that one of your loved ones were pretty much dead. This waiting room sickened me in particular. I remembered Darry pacing back and forth as Sodapop and I sat in the corner staring straight ahead, trying to process The Call. It had been about five years now since receiving that call that changed our lives. The policeman calling only said a few words when Darry's eyes turned to a cold deep abyss of sadness. A look so foreign to Sodapop and me, but one that Darry would never let go of.
