The question of what is real and what is illusion underlines the entire text of Cosi. The the interplay between illusion and reality is neatly expressed through the patients in a mantal hospital. Nowra also explores the notion of theatre as an illusion. For many certain characters in the text the illusionary world of the stage can be both an exhilarating place that offers them inspiration, hope and dreams, as well a being a place that helps them escape from, or creates a void for, their reality. Cosi highlights the synergy that exists between art, as illusion, and reality. By constructing a play within a play Nowra is toying with the idea of theatre being an illusion. The nature of theatre is that it requires the enactment of a fantasy into a real and visual presentation on stage. What is real for the playwright is transformed into an alternate reality for the actors and then again for the audience. Nowra is manipulating this idea, knowing it simultaneously represents the elements of what is real and what is illusion. By doing this Nowra's idea of a play within a play symbolises ......
