Soap Operas Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Soap operas are long running stories shown on television about people's lives. They group it focuses on usually live in a town, village or street. The characters will be from a variety of classes and sometimes races. The most popular soap operas in the UK are Eastenders, Hollyoaks, Emmerdale and Coronation Street. Individualy these can gather up to 20 million viewers at one time. The longest running is Coronation Street, it has been on air for over 40 years. So what keeps viewers coming back for more? Soap Operas consist of conventions which are used throughout the world of soaps. For example, when a marriage takes place in a soap, it never goes to plan. And the same plot line is sometimes used multiple times in different soaps, but they still manage to fool the audience over and over again. Also soap operas can be seen as escapism for people. Watching them is a way to hide away from reality, enter into god mode, and look into a place full of other people worries and problems.
