"You mad murderous bitch!" this line screamed from John Proctor relays John's feelings for Abigail. Clearly his feelings are negative. These negative feelings are a result of Abigail's hypocritical characterization. Many symbols in Arthur Miller's The Crucible, reflect Abigail's hypocrisy. Hypocrisy overall is one of the main themes in The Crucible. Abigail's very diverse hypocritical characterization is one of the main sources of tension in the play, seeing as she instigates most of the trouble in Salem. "You have brought me from my bed to speak of her?" Abigail coldly states this line after John Proctor mentions how Elizabeth will be put on trial shortly. The bed Abigail speaks of is symbolic of hypocrisy. Before the play starts Abigail seduces John into an affair with her. This bed she pictures is one with her and John in it. Abigail despises Elizabeth Proctor and hates thinking of John Proctor as a married man with a wife. But ironically, she desires to be his wife and tells him passionately over and over again that she will someday. This shows her decei......
