Ecologists study the distribution, size and interaction of species within an ecosystem. An ecologist is not just limited to measuring animals but can measure the population of any species including plants, bacteria, fungi and protists. They further specialize the scope of their study by restricting themselves to a particular area or location. Population size determines the amount of ecological impact that the species will have through the consumption of resources, interaction with other species and the production of waste. Biodiversity is a good measure of the health of an biological system. Two popular methods of estimation population size are random grid sampling and capture, mark and recapture. Random grid sampling is used when individuals are easy to see and count, like plants for example. The population is counted in a few portions of an area and then the total population is based on the average number in each grid.
