Russia has been one of the states that has had an important role in the international arena since the 17th century. However, after the fall of the Soviet Union, until the year 2000, it was not powerful enough to protect its own interests. During this time, it lost much of its geopolitical advantages to more powerful western countries or small local governments. Now it is starting to regain strength and trying to reestablish its role everywhere it has lost it. After Belarus, Georgia and some other ex-Soviet republic that have experienced the Russian rise at their expense, I think that Ukraine too, will be the target of an aggressive Russian assault on its independence of policies. In order to reach such a conclusion I think we have to recognize three very important facts. First, we have to realize that the Russian foreign policy operates through the concepts and principles of Realism. My opinion is that the more cooperationist Moscow of the 1990's was due to its weakness. The more power it gains, the more realist it is.
