Why Dont We Place All of Our Eggs in One Basket? Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Back in October, my mother (who is a state employee) received a letter from New York State Comptroller, Thomas P. DiNapoli. The letter was in regard to the NYS pension fund. The letter, and I quote, said, "We don't place all of our investment eggs in one basket". What exactly does that mean?
This means that the investment is "well diversified across multiple asset classes, investment types, markets and industries". This diversification means that our eggs are in many baskets.
"Don't put all of your eggs in one basket" is an old homily. There is a metaphor here, and eggs in this case are fragile and easily broken. This phrase is an important one to remember when playing in the stock market. When you do invest in the stock market, it can be very dangerous to place all of your eggs (dollars) in one type of basket (investment). If anything, you should spread your eggs among many different baskets. This means placing investments in stocks, bonds, mutual funds, and cash.
