The Awakening is a novel of feminist work that expresses women's individualistic behaviors. It begins with a woman named Edna Pontellier who is married to Leonce, they have two children and they live in New Orleans. For the summer they are staying in a Creole vacation home in France. While on vacation Edna spends most of her time with her friend Adele Ratignolle and a young man named Robert. Adele teaches Edna about the Creole lifestyle and how she should portray her freedom. She started to paint and enjoyed swimming with Robert. Edna's self-independence began to unfold the more time she would spend with Robert. Robert became sexually attached to Edna, but knew it was not the right thing to do. Once Edna went back to New Orleans she realized how much she wanted Robert to be apart of her life. Robert left Edna a note stating they could not be together. Edna then returned to France and decided to go for a swim. As she is swimming she thinks about the freedom she had from her family and Robert. In the end Edna swam until she could no longer swim and drowned. In the 1800s Edna Pontelli......
