Hardy - Waterfall of Senses Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report
Under the Waterfall, a poem written by Thomas Hardy, describes an intense longing of the narrator's lost lover. Although her lover is gone, the narrator describes the degree of her affection by explicitly describing her thoughts through the use of senses. This brings the reader into the poem and allows them to see what true love is really like.
The sense of loss for the narrator is first described through her sense of touch. In the beginning of the poem, plunging her arm into a basin of water represents picking up a piece of time (2). This action creates a flashback and brings back memories of an important event that she still vividly remembers of her lover. Reaching into the water she âoenever miss[ed],â meaning that she never physically missed the bucket of water when she reached her arm down. In addition, touching the water also means that she never misses the âoesweet sharp sense of a fugitive dayâ (3). The memory of her lover is so great and clear, that she can still recall specific senses when she plunges her arm in the water.
