During the early nineteenth century Melodramatic theatre was at its peek. Unrealistic and exaggerated plays were constructed for people of the Romantic period, who believed theatre was important to take mankind away from everyday life. Theatre demonstrated love, dramatised scenarios, heroes and villains. However in the twentieth century, whilst society experienced traumatic issues such as the great depression, and world wars, a theatrical philosopher began to question the romanticised way in which theatre was produced. Constantin Stanislavski's theory recognised that theatre should be realistic rather than exaggerated and optimistic. He began to revolutionise theatre and bring depth and meaning to plays. Whilst society today takes Stanislavski's techniques and other similar theories for granted, in the early twentieth century his dramatic visions were the total opposite to everything theatre had been beforehand. Stanislavski brought realism to acting. What we accept as the norm today, was very revolutionary during the twentieth century.
